CGTMSE for Small Businesses: What the Credit Guarantee Actually Does

CGTMSE supports eligible member lending institutions by providing a credit guarantee for qualifying micro and small enterprise facilities. It is not a direct loan from the trust to a shop.

How the route works

  1. Confirm that the business and proposed facility fit the current scheme rules and that the bank or other lender is an eligible member lending institution.
  2. Apply to the lender with business identity, financial and purpose documents. The lender conducts its own appraisal and decides terms.
  3. If approved and eligible, the lender may obtain guarantee cover under the scheme. The guarantee protects the lender under scheme conditions.
  4. Compare the complete loan costs, including any disclosed guarantee-related charges, and follow the repayment agreement.

A practical example

A new retailer with a valid business plan can ask a participating lender whether a proposed working-capital facility is eligible for CGTMSE cover. The lender may still decline the application after appraisal.

Before you act

CGTMSE does not promise sanction, a fixed interest rate or waiver of repayment. Scheme terms and limits change; verify the latest details on the official portal.
